From the day we install your system, your pet must be kept on leash for the full duration the specified training period. This is a must!
-
Taking your
pet for a walk: See
(Walking Your Dog). Your Dog Guard Trainer will instruct you on how this should be accomplished. Follow instructions exactly. By not following these instructions can void containment guarantees given by your Dog Guard Dealer.
-
The tape or caps must remain on the posts for 2 to 4 days, when your pet is ready, your pet may experience the correction while still on leash.
-
Distractions such as family members, sticks, toys, balls, treats and other animals are highly recommended. This will ensure your pet knows to come back away from the line in any situation. Heavy distraction work will start after you pet has received his first correction from the collar. Never call or pull your pet into the signal field.
-
When you do decide to go off leash (7 to 10 days) keep a close eye on your pet. You will start right in with minor distractions and move up from there. If your pet does go through the fence, simply go retrieve you pet. Take the receiver collar off and throw it back into the safe area. Bring him back through, put the collar right back on him, and follow up with some training in that area.
-
Check the collar on a consistent basis for proper fit, especially for a growing puppy. If the collar does not make contact, the correction cannot be delivered. If it is too tight, it will cause irritation of the skin. Take the receiver off as much as possible (every night is recommended) to avoid skin irritation.
-
DO NOT RUSH THE TRAINING! The full duration recommended by your Dog Guard Trainer and your Manual will ensure success. Remember that training is the key to this or any other pet containment system.
-
No verbal commands at the line while training. Simply get them back into the safe zone, then lots of praise and play.
-
While the only maintenance is changing the batteries in the receiver, we recommend you check your system periodically. Stay on the battery plan; and, if you do have a problem with the system, call your Dog Guard of Northern New Jersey Dealer immediately. Do no wait until your pet leaves the property to have the problem rectified.
